Overview
Home appliances and HVAC equipment are built to run for years, often in a hot or humid enclosure, and their reliability depends on a few electromechanical and passive parts. The relay that switches a compressor or a heater must survive the inrush of a motor start, and the electrolytic capacitor that smooths the control supply must outlast the product. Relays for Motor and Heater Loads
An appliance switches motors, heaters and pumps from a low-voltage logic signal, and the relay must carry the steady current and survive the inrush. A compressor or a large motor draws several times its running current at start, and a heater has a low cold resistance that draws a high initial current, so a relay that is not rated for the inrush will weld or erode its contacts. The Panasonic JS series is a compact power relay with silver-tin-oxide contacts that resist that inrush, and it switches up to 10 A at 250 V AC. Its sealed construction lets the board be washed after soldering, and its universal terminal footprint fits a standard board layout.
Coil and Life
The coil voltage is chosen to match the control supply, and the relay life is chosen to match the appliance life target. A relay that is correctly rated for the load and the inrush will last the life of the appliance, while an under-rated relay fails early. The contact rating and the expected electrical life should both be checked against the load profile.
Long-Life Capacitors
The control supply of an appliance is smoothed by an electrolytic capacitor, and that capacitor is the part most likely to fail first. Its life is set by the case temperature and the ripple current, and an appliance enclosure is hot, so a standard capacitor runs near its limit. The Panasonic FR series is a low-impedance, high-ripple part with a 5000 to 10000 hour endurance at 105 degrees Celsius, so it lasts far longer in the same heat. The design rule is to match the voltage with margin, set the capacitance from the allowable ripple, and confirm the ripple current at the hot case temperature.
